Grokipedia, 새로운 정보 출처로 부상하는가
엘론 머스크가 만든 Grokipedia가 AI 도구에서 점점 많이 인용되고 있다. ChatGPT뿐만 아니라, Google의 Gemini와 AI Overviews, AI Mode 같은 서비스에서도 Grokipedia를 자주 참조한다. 하지만 이 출처의 신뢰성에 대한 우려가 증가하고 있다.
지난해 10월 말에 출범한 이후로 Grokipedia는 아직까지 작은 정보 출처에 머물러 있지만, 그 인용 횟수는 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. Ahrefs의 마케팅 전략 책임자 글렌 얼솝은 Grokipedia가 ChatGPT의 약 1,360만 프롬프트 중 26만 3천여 번 언급되었으며, English Wikipedia는 290만 번 언급되었다고 전했다. 얼솝은 "아직 차이는 크지만 신생 플랫폼임을 고려할 때 놀라운 수준"이라고 했다.
또한, Profound의 연구원 사르타지 라즈팔에 따르면 Grokipedia 관련 인용구가 하루에 약 0.01%에서 0.02%를 차지하며 점차 증가하고 있다고 한다. Semrush의 마케팅 플랫폼에서는 Grokipedia가 Google의 AI 응답에서 차지하는 가시성이 증가했음을 확인했다.
하지만 전문가들은 Grokipedia 사용에 주의가 필요하다고 경고했다. Wikipedia와 달리 인간 편집자가 투명한 과정을 거치지 않고, Grokipedia는 xAI의 챗봇 Grok에 의해 만들어졌다. 이 챗봇은 자극적인 언행으로 논란이 되고 있으며, 그 결과 편향된 정보가 퍼질 위험이 있다.
OpenAI 대변인은 ChatGPT가 웹을 검색할 때 다양한 공개 소스를 참조한다고 설명하며, 사용자가 직접 출처를 평가할 수 있도록 제공한다고 밝혔다.
많은 전문가들은 Grokipedia가 정확성과 신뢰성을 갖추지 못했다고 지적하며, 그러한 정보 출처를 당연히 신뢰해선 안 된다고 강조했다. Semrush의 온라인 가시성 책임자 리 맥켄지는 "Grokipedia의 신뢰성은 허울일 뿐"이라고 평가하며, 규모에 걸맞은 권위 있는 참고 자료로 활용되기엔 부족하다고 평가했다.
Grokipedia, Emerging as a New Source of Information?
Elon Musk's Grokipedia is increasingly being cited across AI tools. Not only is ChatGPT referencing it, but Google's Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode are also frequently turning to Grokipedia. However, concerns over its reliability are rising.
Since its launch in October last year, Grokipedia remains a minor source of information but its citation frequency has steadily climbed. Glen Allsopp from Ahrefs revealed that Grokipedia appeared in over 263,000 responses from 13.6 million prompts on ChatGPT, compared to 2.9 million mentions of English Wikipedia. Allsopp mentioned, “They’re quite a way off, but it’s still impressive for how new they are.”
According to Profound's researcher Sartaj Rajpal, Grokipedia sees about 0.01% to 0.02% of daily citation shares, steadily increasing. Marketing platform Semrush also noted an uptick in Grokipedia's visibility within Google's AI responses.
Experts, however, caution against using Grokipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, which involves human editors, Grokipedia’s content is generated by xAI’s chatbot Grok, known for its controversial outbursts, risking biased information dissemination.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that ChatGPT aims to source a wide range of publicly available information, allowing users to assess the reliability of sources directly.
Many experts emphasize that Grokipedia lacks accuracy and reliability, advising against taking it as a credible source. Leigh McKenzie from Semrush remarked, “Grokipedia feels like a cosplay of credibility,” underscoring that it doesn't yet fit the role as a dependable reference at scale.
