스페이스X, 100만 개의 태양광 인공위성 데이터 센터 출시에 대한 연방 승인 요청
스페이스X는 연방 통신 위원회(FCC)에 인공위성을 최대 100만 개까지 발사하여 인공지능 데이터 센터로 활용할 계획을 담은 요청서를 제출했다. 회사 측은 이러한 인공위성이 AI 컴퓨팅 파워의 급증하는 수요를 가장 효율적으로 충족시킬 것이라고 설명하며, 이를 태양의 모든 에너지를 사용할 수 있는 문명 단계로 가는 첫걸음으로 보고 있다. 이와 함께 인류의 다행성 시대를 위한 준비도 강조했다.
일각에서는 100만 개라는 인공위성 수가 단번에 승인될 가능성은 낮다고 지적하며, 이는 협상의 시작점이 될 것이라고 평가했다. FCC는 최근 7,500개의 스타링크 인공위성 발사를 승인했지만 나머지 14,988개의 제안된 인공위성에 대해서는 승인을 보류했다.
현재 유럽우주국에 따르면 지구 궤도를 도는 인공위성은 약 15,000개가 있으며, 이미 오염 및 파편 문제를 일으키고 있다.
한편 아마존은 로켓 부족을 이유로 FCC에 인공위성 배포 기한 연장을 요청한 상태다. 스페이스X는 테슬라와 엑스AI와의 합병을 고려 중인 것으로 알려졌으며, 기업 공개를 앞두고 있다.
SpaceX Seeks Federal Approval for Launching 1 Million Solar-Powered Satellite Data Centers
SpaceX has requested approval from the Federal Communications Commission to launch up to 1 million satellites designed to function as data centers harnessing solar power for artificial intelligence. The proposal is ambitious, claiming these satellites will not only meet the growing needs for AI computing power efficiently but also mark a milestone towards achieving a civilization capable of fully utilizing solar energy and securing humanity's future beyond Earth.
There are views suggesting that the number of proposed satellites is unlikely to gain immediate approval, considering it a starting point for negotiations. Recently, the FCC approved the launch of 7,500 additional Starlink satellites while postponing authorization for the remaining 14,988 satellites.
According to the European Space Agency, about 15,000 satellites currently orbit Earth, contributing to issues of pollution and debris.
Meanwhile, Amazon has sought an extension on its FCC deadline due to a shortage of rockets. Separately, SpaceX is reportedly in discussions about merging with Tesla and xAI in preparation for going public.
