블루 오리진, 2년간 우주 관광 비행 중단… NASA 월면 착륙선 개발에 집중
블루 오리진이 향후 2년 동안 우주 관광 비행을 중단하고 NASA의 월면 착륙선 개발에 전념할 계획이다. 이로 인해 뉴 셰퍼드의 발사는 당분간 볼 수 없게 되었다. 블루 오리진은 스페이스X와 함께 아르테미스 프로그램을 위한 인간 착륙 시스템을 개발할 기업으로 선정된 바 있으며, 아르테미스 III와 V 미션에 활용될 착륙선 작업을 진행할 예정이다.
이 회사는 원래 NASA의 게이트웨이 역에서 달의 남극으로 우주비행사를 이동시키기 위한 착륙 시스템 구축 계약을 체결했다. 이후 NASA는 스타십 테스트 실패로 인한 지연 문제로, 블루 오리진에게 아르테미스 III를 위한 대안 착륙선을 설계해 달라는 요청을 받았다. 아르테미스 III는 프로그램 내 최초의 유인 달 착륙 미션이 될 예정이며, 미국 정부는 대통령의 임기 내에 이를 완료하기를 기대하고 있다.
뉴 셰퍼드 우주선은 관광객을 태워 잠시 동안 무중력을 경험할 수 있는 준궤도까지 비행한다. 이 첫 관광 비행에는 제프 베조스가 탑승했으며, 지금까지 37차례 비행을 통해 98명의 승객을 우주로 이끌었다.
Blue Origin Halts Space Tourist Flights, Shifts Focus to NASA Lunar Landers
Blue Origin has announced a shift in focus from its space tourism ventures to concentrate on developing lunar landers for NASA, pausing its New Shepard flights for at least the next two years. This decision means that New Shepard launches will be on hold for some time. Blue Origin, along with SpaceX, was selected by NASA to create human landing systems for the Artemis program, specifically targeting the Artemis III and Artemis V missions.
Initially, the company was contracted to construct the human landing system to transport astronauts from NASA's Gateway station to the lunar South Pole for the Artemis V mission. However, following delays in SpaceX's Starship tests, NASA requested Blue Origin to design an alternative lander for the Artemis III mission. This mission is projected to be the first crewed moon landing of the Artemis program, with an intended completion before the end of the current presidential term.
New Shepard has been utilized for suborbital flights offering brief periods of weightlessness to space tourists, with Jeff Bezos being among the inaugural passengers during its first expedition. Since then, it has completed 37 flights and carried 98 passengers, including Katy Perry and William Shatner.
